The Gallery - A Happy Memory

This post is slightly cheating as it is about two happy memories but they are linked and as I don't have a scanner I can't put up the photos from the first one.

The photos in this post were taken on a family holiday to Sri Lanka in February of this year. My husband had been unemployed for some time the previous year and had started to do competitions and he won us a holiday with the fabulous Trailfinders and we chose to go to Sri Lanka.

A place we have many happy memories of as this is where we got married over 10 years ago. Shunning big white weddings we ran away and had a wedding and honeymoon in one - getting married in the lovely Bentota Beach Hotel on the shore of the lagoon, followed by riding an elephant on the picture perfect white sand beach. I had frangipani flowers (or temple flowers as they call them) in my hair and for my bouquet and I wore a turquoise and gold sari. For the eagle eyed of you (Kate takes 5) this explains the frangipani flowers header on my blog.

When we heard that we had won a holiday we had to take the girls to Sri Lanka. We did it a little differently this time, we had a driver and car and we were chauffeured around the sites and stayed in gorgeous 4* and 5* hotels(last time we had bussed, trained and backpacked for 10 days until we got to Bentota Beach). This was essential though really with two small girls - aged 3 and 5, as we probably wouldn't have chosen to take them back there until they were a bit older if we had not won the holiday.

Sri Lanka was everything we had remembered and more and we collected a whole new set of happy memories and these are the pictures I have chosen to use here for the Gallery this week. There is no doubt it was a huge culture shock for the girls but they loved it and are still talking about going back. It was hot, steamy, friendly, colourful, fragrant, hectic, peaceful and amazing once again. One day hopefully we will all go back again. Anyway, enough waffle, on with the pictures - here are some happy memories!

Day 1 - much anticipated trip watching the elephants splashing in the river at the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage followed by feeding the babies- one of our favourite places last time too.

Still a bit hot and bothered by the lake in Kandy

The avenue of Royal Palms in the Botanical Gardens, Kandy, remembered from our first trip

Cooler - up in the mountains with the tea gardens where we stayed at the fantastic Heritance Tea Factory Hotel near Nuwara Eliya

Nutter on safari at Yala - a fabulous day where the girls were wonderful on a long safari (also happened to be husbands birthday!)

Sri Lanka's national bird - the Peacock - seen on safari in Yala

View from our balcony at the stunning Lighthouse Hotel in Galle - possibly one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in - want to go back!!

First ride in a Tuk Tuk - Little Miss Sunshine was obsessed by tuk tuks all holiday and spent every possible moment tuk tuk spotting (not hard - there are a lot of them!) Our driver called her tuk tuk girl!

Wearing the frangipani flowers left by the housekeepers at the Lighthouse in Galle!
Leaving Galle on a train - our little adventure with the girls. We left the driver in Galle and got a train complete with all our luggage to Bentota. I think the hotel in Bentota was a bit surprised by 4 sweaty travellers turning up on foot from the train rather than in an air con car!

V hot and sweaty on the train!
Elephants bottoms!

Sunset on Bentota Beach - we chilled out for the last seven days at a beach hotel in Bentota where we got married 10 years before.

The elephant we rode at the Bentota Beach Hotel just like Mummy and Daddy did when they got married!

Frangipani flowers - my favourite ever :)
The beautiful Bentota Beach!

So there we are my happy memories - hopefully it hasn't been too much like looking through my holiday album!!
