Nov 28th - #NaBloPoMo - Post 28 - British Sausage Week

It's British Sausage Week this week according to my daughter's school - except it isn't. Let me explain - oldest comes home from school last week with a letter saying that to celebrate British Sausage Week they were doing a special Sausage Lunch on 29th November. Now there's nothing unusual about that they often have special school lunches for Christmas, Easter, Bonfire Night, end of term and so on but  I saw this and thought - ahh - good idea for a NaBloPoMo post so I googled British Sausage Week. Turns out it was 31st Oct - 6th Nov!

I thought I'd carry on and do the post anyway so retrospectively - here's to British Sausage Week and here's a really quick sausage recipe for those days when you can't be bothered to spend hours slaving over a hot stove (that's every night then!) It originated in a supermarket mag I think but it's become one of our midweek staples.

Quick Sausage and Beans Supper

1 pack sausages - either 6 or 8  - don't use your best Farmers Market ones!
1 large tin of mixed beans in a spicy sauce (you can get these in most supermarkets)
2 or 3 shallots or 1 small red onion
1 clove garlic (optional)
A few drops of Tabasco or other spicy sauce (optional)

Chop and fry the shallots (or onion) and garlic if you are using it. Best to use a wok or deep heavy pan. Chop the sausages into about 4 pieces each and add to the shallots - fry until cooked through and then add the tin of beans and the Tabasco if using. Turn the heat down and let them bubble away for 5-10 minutes to make sure it is all cooked through. Serve with couscous or rice. This all takes about 15 minutes so it's a really easy supper - filling and perfect for those cold winter evenings.

So there you are  - here's to it not being British Sausage Week!

  1. Ha ha, love it. That sounds the perfect quick meal for my rabble, but I'll have to make some substitutes. Toulouse or merguet sausages (very spicy) as that's pretty much all we can get here and I'll have to make my own beans in spicy sauce. I can get hold of the shallots and garlic no problem (this is France!).

  2. It is always British Sausage Week in our household!

Merguez are just the best.... I got our butcher in Auckland to start making them and they turned into his best selling sausage - I'm still working on our butcher here in West Yorkshire. No idea where to get a recipe from though.
