Remembrance Sunday - Lest We Forget

A friend of mine posted this poem on her facebook page but I'm afraid I have no idea who wrote it, I just thought it was lovely and perfect for explaining to children why we wear poppies
Why are they selling poppies, Mummy?
Selling poppies in town today.
The poppies, child, are flowers of love.
For the men who marched away.
But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy?
Why not a beautiful rose?
Because my child, men fought and died
In the fields where the poppies grow.

But why are the poppies so red, Mummy?
Why are the poppies so red?
Red is the colour of blood, my child.

The blood that our soldiers shed.

The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy.
Why does it have to be black?
Black, my child, is the symbol of grief.
For the men who never came back.

But why, Mummy are you crying so?
Your tears are giving you pain.
My tears are my fears for you my child.
For the world is forgetting again.

  1. Such a touching poem. With World War veterans passing away we really do need to try and make sure future generations don't forget the bravery and sacrifice of these men

  3. great poem, I've never heard it before... Captures the essence brilliantly. So what do you think of the new talks of modern day soldiers being killed at war being remembered on Remembrance Sunday - do you think it should be for all soldiers that die in action or should Remembrance Sunday be held sacred to those that died in previous centuries?

  4. this poem made me cry but when I read it I am remembering not just the soldiers from the World Wars but all those killed in action. I think we should remember all those killed at war (and I think most people do) but we must also never forget how and why it all started.
