Wimbledon, Gin and some grown up 'me-time' with #cbias

Following a very busy weekend making quite possibly the coolest scarecrows on the planet and refereeing golf competitions at the village fun day Rollercoaster Dad and I were more than ready for some grown-up time and to catch up on all those Wimbledon matches that we missed. The idea of a cool Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic after a hot summers day was bliss so I was delighted to be given the opportunity by the #cbias community to do just that.

cool scarecrows
I had to show you the cool scarecrows!
I have to admit that I never used to be much interested in watching Wimbledon (or any sport come to that) but after marrying an avid watcher of sport I was converted (or should I say indoctrinated) into the joys of many sports, including tennis. Of course having some British hopefuls in the mix always adds to the frisson with any sport and I was looking forward to putting my feet up in front of the telly.

I decided that as we were watching Wimbledon I should see if I could find a simple gin and strawberry cocktail as strawberries are to Wimbledon what tonic is to gin. I needed it to be quick as I didn't want to spend too much valuable me-time faffing around. After a bit of t'internet research I found the perfect recipe for a Strawberry Gin Smash. I needed limes and strawberries, along with the Bombay Sapphire so I dashed off to Tesco's for all these lovely goodies. If you want to check out how the shopping went just click the picture of my goodies below:

Once we were home from shopping I hurried the girls to bed as quickly as I could - gin was calling! Along with the Strawberry Gin Smash I thought we could have some classic strawberries and cream. First of all I put half a teaspoon of sugar and muddled it with a squeeze of lime juice (what a great word to use for mixing - but I think that's the official term!) Next I added two sliced strawberries and topped it up with crushed ice.

The recipe doesn't say it needs crushed ice but it was an excuse to get our rather under-used ice crusher out of the cupboard! This was purchased way back BC (before children) when we lived a heady care-free life in London. These days it mostly gathers dust. I rather like it - it always reminds me of a friendly alien! However I digress. After the ice comes the gin - I do love that blue bottle of the Bombay Sapphire (about 75mls), top it up with some soda water add a strawberry and a wedge of lime to garnish and you have the ideal Wimbledon cocktail.

OK so Rollercoaster Dad doesn't like gin so he has rum and coke - pah!
I served the drinks up with some classic strawberries and cream as you can't watch Wimbledon without strawberries can you? Top tip (from my Grandma) is to sprinkle sugar and pepper (yes pepper) on the strawberries, pour over some cream and smash up with a fork - heavenly. The pepper brings out the flavour like nothing else.

Finally I get to sit down with my Bombay Sapphire - thank goodness for the 'red button'!
At last I get to sit down and enjoy some grown up time with Rollercoaster Dad - even if he can't be persuaded to try the Bombay Sapphire - he has rum and coke!! I really enjoyed my special Strawberry and Gin Wimbledon cocktail and I loved the Bombay Sapphire gin. It has a really delicate but clear flavour - worth that extra dosh!

In fact I liked it so much that I'm having it again tonight - catching up on Wimbledon again - but this time it's a classic G&T with a slice of lime and a bowl of Bombay Mix which goes very well with Bombay Sapphire gin.

Bombay Mix goes pretty well with Bombay Sapphire gin - cheers!
At this rate that big bottle of gin will be finished by the end of the week - especially if Andy Murray keeps on winning - cheers!

  1. I've never tried pepper on strawberries before! I've hear that red wine or balsamic vinegar can be pretty good too.
