Christmas! - Project 52 - Week 52

Well who would have thought it - I did it, we did it if I think of all the fellow bloggers that made it to the end - 52 weeks and not one missed - although it was close at times!

And what a year - we have lost loved ones, I have become employed again, we have celebrated the amazing Diamond Jubilee and the even more amazing and fantastic Olympics, stayed in a yurt, gone on a cruise, visited a glacier, had big birthdays and smaller but no less significant birthdays, my little one is now a big schoolgirl and my bigger one has attained the dizzy heights of Juniors, the veg crop and all things garden failed miserably and we have had more rain than we ever thought possible. I will be saying goodbye to the 2012 with a certain amount of sadness but who knows what 2013 may bring - let us hope it brings some smiles and happiness to many people. I may even continue with another Project 52 for another year - but I haven't quite decided yet.

In the meantime here is my last picture for 2012 and we have come full circle as of course the most important event this week was Christmas! We spent Christmas at my Mums with the rest of the family as this felt right after the loss of my dear step-father earlier this year. This was the first time we had spent Christmas Eve there in many years and so the first the girls had hung their stockings by the big fireplace. (I'm pretty sure they both still believe too and I will do pretty much anything to make sure that continues for as long as possible.) I hope you all had a lovely and happy Christmas and here's to 2013 bringing much joy and happiness (and hopefully a bit more sunshine!)

Happy Christmas to All!

I'm signing off now until after Christmas so I am sharing my favourite ever Christmas poem - I'm sure you all know it but here it is again!

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!

Father Christmas
    'Twas the Night Before Christmas'
by Clement Clarke Moore

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Cakes, biscuits and the end of term - Project 52 - Week 51

I am quite relieved it is the end of term and the madness of the last few weeks is finally at an end. I am really hoping I can now relax and enjoy some Christmas spirit. Oldest has already collapsed into bed with end of term poorliness but we still managed a trip to the best Christmas garden centre ever, complete with real live donkeys, reindeer, pigs and goats and as an end of term treat we had cakes and hot chocolate in the cafe.

Earlier in the week we busied ourselves making presents for the teachers. I was really quite proud of them this year if I say so myself! We never spend on much on them but usually make edible treats and dress them up with bows and ribbons. This year it was iced Christmas biscuits in 75p jars from Ikea - bargain and they looked great (in my humble opinion!!) I was tempted to post some rather lovely pics of the Christmas scenes at the garden centre but I've gone with a montage of the cakes and biscuits instead.

Merry Christmas everyone!
